I started in the store when I was 16 on the shop floor. I conducted a variety of tasks and responsibilities in different departments of the store including the tills, Deli, bakery, online orders, and café. After completing my degree in Commerce, I started as Duty Manager and have been in that role the past year. I will be moving to a front of house manager role and am looking forward to the new challenges that this role will bring.
One of my favourite things about working in retail is the variety that comes with the job. With the rapid pace of change there is in retail, every day is different bringing new opportunities and experiences. I knew a completely office-based job wouldn’t be the career path for me, so being out on the shop floor, meeting with staff and building relationships with our customers provides a brilliant social aspect to the job that was critical for me.
Throughout my career in Supervalu, I have received a variety of training and development that has allowed me to grow both personally and professionally. I recently completed the Inspire HR Programme provided by Musgrave. This provided great understanding on multiple topics regarding the management of people, a critical aspect of any management role in retail. On the job training has also allowed me to develop skills such as organisation and communication. Insights shared by colleagues provides hands-on information that can be used practically in my day-to-day work.
The Store Manager has been a brilliant mentor to me throughout my career, providing guidance and answering all my queries without hesitation. In addition, the Store Operations Manager has always supported and given me belief in my capabilities when I may have been struggling to do so myself.
Retail is a brilliant career opportunity as there really is something for everyone. In today’s world there is a lot of pressure on people to go to college and get degrees, which is not a feasible path for everyone. Retail shows building a reputable career is possible without this, through developing the individual you are with appropriate supports.
